Six key principles
Alpha’s investment philosophy outlines the principles that guide our investment decision-making process, beginning with putting the best interests of our clients first. Accordingly, these key principles also guide our approach to SMA portfolio construction and active funds management.
Alpha’s overarching investment philosophy is predicated on the preservation of capital and its purchasing power over an appropriate timeframe. We endeavour to take investment risk only when prospective returns are assessed as being adequate to compensate for the risk being taken over a relevant timeframe.

- We take investment risk where our forecast returns are adequate to compensate for those risks over the relevant timeframe.
- The relationship between risk and return exists over the long term, but is not always consistent over shorter time frames.
- We prioritise valuation over price as assets will ultimately revert to their ‘fair’ value over time, but acknowledge markets are not always rational in their pricing or timing, creating an opportunity for active investing to deliver additional performance.
- We use portfolio diversification to cost effectively manage the risk of an uncertain future.
- Fees and taxes impact performance so their consideration is integral to our actions.
