Approach to ESG
As a part of the investment process for managed funds, we seek to invest in companies that demonstrate leading ESG and ethical practices, while seeking to avoid exposure to companies and issuers whose core business is in activities which could be considered to negatively impact the environment or society.
The incorporation of this ESG overlay into the product was done in light of an increased desire by investors to understand and ensure that investments were inline with, or at least not opposed to, their personal views. This process also allows us to prioritise well managed companies whose future performance is less likely to be impacted by negative outcomes that occur either due to their poor governance or management practises, or the impact that changing societal demand will have on their good or service.

ESG Solution
The Alpha Managed Funds have an exclusion of controversial industries and companies. We use a simple ‘core’/primary business activity test to establish which types of companies are excluded from the portfolio on ESG grounds. The systematic exclusionary process and how ESG and sustainability is incorporated into the investment process is highly efficient and this enables us to provide the Fund without additional cost. Alpha’s investment process ensures that our portfolios exhibit strong sustainability characteristics measured in both ESG scoring and also the Carbon emissions footprint of the portfolio when compared to the benchmark.
Core business activities to avoid
Alpha’s investment approach actively considers sustainability issues when selecting investments.
Alpha will not directly invest in companies who are directly involved in the following activities:
- Production of tobacco
- Manufacture of controversial weapons (such as cluster bombs and nuclear weapons).

- Manufacture of Non-controversial Weapons
